British Values

Defining 'British' values

At St Michael's CE Primary School, we align with the DFE's guidance to foster "a clear and rigorous expectation for all schools to promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs." Our approach focusses on embedding these values within our school's broader ethos, emphasising inclusivity and meaningful connections to Britishness that resonate with all students. Rather than adhering to narrow definitions, we aim for a well-rounded approach to help pupils understand and appreciate diversity, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to thrive in a varied society.

Global Awareness and Engagement

Our curriculum extends beyond the classroom with Global Ambassadors, Agents of Change, School Council and Eco Reps helping pupils connect with global events and examine them through both British and Christian values. Each month, a Foundation Governor leads a global ambassador assembly, fostering age-appropriate discussions on challenging topics. Weekly assemblies introduce current events, coupled with maps for geographical context, to enhance students' awareness of worldwide issues.

Key values promoted include:

  • Dignity and respect for all
  • Advocacy against injustice and inequality
  • Community support for initiatives like CLIC Sargent, the Red Cross, and Stretford Foodbank, amongst others

British Values in Practice

  1. Democracy
Democracy is woven throughout our school environment. Students are encouraged to share their ideas in forums such as the Eco Committee and through discussions with governors. Our RE curriculum and assemblies incorporate discussions on voting and majority rule, emphasising democratic principles in both school and civic life.

  2. Rule of Law
Emphasising the importance of rules, we teach students to understand the value of laws in fostering a safe and just society. Engaging visits from community service representatives, like the police and fire services, reinforce these principles. Our restorative justice model helps resolve conflicts and instils a sense of accountability.

  3. Individual Liberty
We support individual freedom, ensuring students make informed choices in a safe and empowering environment. Through PSHE lessons, pupils learn about rights, responsibilities, and safety, cultivating self-confidence and a sense of self-worth. Our anti-bullying initiatives and value-based culture encourage a caring, collaborative atmosphere.

  4. Mutual Respect
Central to our ethos, mutual respect underpins our school’s values, guiding interactions amongst students, staff, families, and the wider community. Pupils demonstrate respect through initiatives like visiting Delamere Special School, performing for the elderly, and participating in environmental efforts led by the Eco Committee.

  5. Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
Our  RE Syllabus promotes understanding and respect for diverse beliefs, with assemblies and discussions that celebrate cultural differences. Through Worships, students engage deeply with other cultures and viewpoints, reinforcing the importance of tolerance.

At St. Michael's, our commitment to these principles is evident in the daily experiences and opportunities we offer, supporting each child to grow as a respectful, informed, and engaged member of both their local and global communities.
